Two trains passing at Skelmanthorpe on a busy day.

Skelmanthorpe acted as the railway's western terminus for some four years before the Shelley extension was opened. This is now just a through station, however, on busy days trains pass in the loop at Skelmanthorpe making this a hive of activity. There is access to local footpaths from here and it is possible to walk to either Clayton West or Shelley and Skelmanthorpe village is just five minutes walk away.

The photo below shows a view of Skelmanthorpe station from the road bridge with Jay & works train in the loop.
